Happy Guesthouse - Siem Reap, Cambodia

Bring me to Happy Place, and the confused tuk tuk driver scratches his head.

Who would’ve thought that you could find a happy place where everyone seems to know each other and that good meals are within your reach. I’m talking about the Happy Guesthouse in Siem Reap.

Located at the backpacker’s area of Wat Bo Village, the Happy Guesthouse is more than your average lodging house. I’m talking about good food, great staff, pleasant guests, nice ambience and good time. It seems like everyone is too busy socializing and eating that the place was never empty; a happy place indeed.

Me and my buddy were guilty of not staying in this guesthouse but we’re quite regular guests there for we availed of their offered tour packages. The cheerful owner/manager, Chhorpoan, assisted us in everything (bold, italics, underline) we wanted and so much more. We’ve got three full days in Siem Reap and Chhorpoan arranged everything for us (the tour starts at $20 for a full day temple tour). Our tour mainly focused on the temples and the Floating Village/Forest - $40 for everything via tuk tuk (check here for discounted tours, transportation and activities in Siem Reap)

Aside from the tour packages they offer, the guesthouse also provides other services such as; laundry services, lockers and luggage storage, bike rentals, free Internet access, airport transfers, bus and boat tickets around Indochina region, Temple Pass assistance and much more.

We also checked out the rooms they offer and were surprised with the rates (starting at $7 per night). Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, they have every option for all travelers out there.

There’s also this laid-back atmosphere around the place. Couches, lounging areas, books, board games and other stuff kept the guests busy all the time. And have I told you how good their meals are? Western and Khmer food are on the menu list. We had around three full meals in this guesthouse and we just couldn’t get enough of their yummy food (which is relatively cheap, around $2 for a meal).

What I remembered most is the Chicken with Morning Glory meal (served with steamed rice and fresh vegetables). I couldn’t figure out at first what the Morning Glory was until it was served; apparently, those are deep fried onion leaks – yummy! You must try that.

What I love most about Happy Guesthouse is the relaxed and laid-back feel of the place. It seems like time is not an object here. People just lounge and read and talk and read again. And oh, how could I forget the nice meals they serve. I’d surely want a happy place like that nearby.

I can also say that Chhorpoan (and her parents) are absolutely one of the reasons why guests are overflowing. Their attention and affection to all of their guests are notable. It really feels that you’re in a community of good souls. It’s that feeling that you can’t wait to get back there after the tiring temple runs just to tell them how your daw was. And that’s Khmer hospitality at its best just for you.

  2. I have just booked for my 2 day stay in Siem Reap and I was concerned about how I'll go to Ho Chi Minh from there. Good thing I found out that they offer bus transfers around Indochina. And they have bike rentals too! :D Thanks for the info.
