The House of Dancing Water: A Water Show Extraordinaire

Just when I thought that everything will be set on water suddenly an entire stage emerged from underneath and the whole space turned into a flat platform and then heart-pumping stunts were performed. The House of Dancing Water in Macau was truly an experience that involves brilliantly executed circus acts, theatrical performances and death-defying stunts in an extraordinary production design. This wouldn’t be dubbed as the world’s largest water-based show for nothing.

It may not be our typical backpacking itinerary but one of my buddies was appealing to include what he quoted as the best show in Macau during our three-day visit in the city. I thought hard about it and felt somewhat compelled about approving to it, but somehow I did, a decision that I did not regret having.

City of Dreams
We had online ticket reservations and went ahead of time to claim it. City of Dreams is the official home of The House of Dancing Water and we took the free shuttle from downtown Macau that brought us to the venue. Good thing was that Metropole Hotel, our home in Macau, was a 2-minute walk to the shuttle parking so we needed not to exert much effort on going there (check here for discounted tours, transportation and activities in Macau).

We’re just in time for the 8:00 pm show and without fussing around much we went straight to our assigned seats (few rows from the splash seats) and geared up for the show. No flash photography and video recording, please, do bear that in mind. The 2,000-seating capacity was almost packed that provided a 270-degree view of the dancing water theater. There was no break so you’d really wanna do your extra matters right before the show starts.

The amazing stage pool
It started a bit slow as a fisherman was sailing along what seemed to be an ocean with his boat. After the audience got enthralled on the amazing stage pool filled with 3.7 million gallons of water, an enormous pirate ship surfaced from the water and the action-packed show commenced. Whew! Well I don’t wanna reveal much on the plot ‘coz I want all of you to look forward to it.

I was never bored but rather was yearning for more after the one and a half hour-show. I caught myself at the edge of my comfy seat with my jaw hanging. I especially loved the chandelier part where the acrobats wriggled into it in perfect synchronization. I also loved the water stunts from the world class performers. The panorama from the 270-degree view theater gave a different perspective for each audience.

My favorite stunt
A melange of fantasy, love story, suspense, thriller, humor and aerial exhibitions entertained us for the rest of the show. It was flawlessly executed that you’d wish you were part of the team. It was so inspiring to see those passionate actors and production team doing what they love. So more than the message of the story and the impeccable performances, it was their love for their chosen craft that was celebrated during the show.

The cast bowed that prompted the end of the show. Everyone applauded and gave a standing ovation. The 5-year development stage and 2-year rehearsal period was worth it and definitely one of the best shows I’ve seen yet far. I’m pretty sure that a number of Filipino talents are included in the production which made me very proud.

There’s just a downside in watching The House of Dancing Water though; the show has raised the bar for everyone in the league that I’d probably be comparing all other future shows to this one.

  1. I remember on last season's Amazing Race they had this as one of the bumps or something.
