It was half past seven in the evening when the sun kissed Langkawi’s horizon, the sky was beaming in reddish orange hues. Everyone was so tired after hours of diving into a moving boat of what I now call the pirate ship. The salt water Jacuzzi net was still hanging when hours ago it was filled with a bunch of happy folks. It was quiet and time stood still as we watched a great end to a fun-filled afternoon. And then someone suddenly turned the music up and I started to feel the groove. I stood up and danced the night away and invited the crowd to join me like it was my party, I never thought that a sunset cruise could be this fun.
It was the second week of our Beach Hop Asia 2016 summer backpacking trip and our
day was getting dull as the scorching heat of Langkawi drained all our energy. And then I thought of something great to waste the afternoon away, a sunset cruise
perhaps (we scored a good deal from Tropical Charters).
It
was around five in the afternoon when we boarded a boat that would bring us to
a bigger one docked in the middle of Andaman Sea. There were almost twenty
guests that afternoon and I didn’t know what to expect.
The
moment we arrived at the big boat, it felt like I was on a set of a pirate movie;
it was rustic, cinematic and charming.

From
the ladders, riggings, to the wheel, everything looked staged, but in a very
good way. We were starting to feel comfy on our chosen spot at the bow when someone
came to us and offered some beer, probably breaking the ice. He was so
enthusiastic and even pointed us the cooler where the beer stash (including a
secret liquor mixture) rested. It was Patrick, a French guy who serves as the
resident “captain” of the ship.
I
saw a diving board near the bow and asked Patrick if I can jump while waiting
for the other guests to arrive. The cool guy nodded in approval, I went to the
board and dove without any warning.

He
motioned a go signal for me to jump after mentioning a few safety reminders. And
then I jumped! I hit the sea and plunged into the into its deep end; it was liberating. Everyone cheered as I emerged back to the surface.
Patrick asked me, in a teasingly manner, if I could be his model for his diving stunts, I gave my evil grin as this was a very
devious plan (for the fun for everyone).

So
we were comfortably lazing on the deck when the cruise commenced along Andaman
Sea. People were starting to loosen up while me and my buddy were taking a few
snaps of the great view. Music from the 80s was being played and almost
everyone was grooving into it.
We
were on our second can of beer when someone signaled the unrolling of the net.
The salt water Jacuzzi is one of the main features of the ship wherein guests can
enjoy sailing while being on the water through the net. There was a catch
though, we needed to dive from the platform and swim our way to the net while
the ship is sailing.

It
may be really challenging but Patrick made sure that everything was safe. He
jumped first and showed us how it was done and everyone (who’s daring enough)
followed his suit. Of course, I did join the crowd (cliff jumping is fun but jumping on a cruising boat was much more fun).

There
were others who were either afraid to jump or had zero knowledge in swimming.
Patrick sought my help and asked if we could do some jumping (almost acrobatic)
stunts for those who were afraid to jump on their own.
He then carried me, and together, we jumped into the water and brought me safely to the net. We did this three times in different ways. Everyone was thrilled and started to ask him for a tandem dive into the water. It was so fun that in no time, the net almost filled up.

I was the last one hanging on to the net and it was a fun experience, like I was part of the ship as we sailed and I could feel the water streaming through my body. This is way better than all Jacuzzis I had, for sure.

It’s
not every day that you can have a unique experience of being one with the sea, literally
and figuratively. Sometimes it’s really good to let it all out and just enjoy a
certain moment while it lasts. Plus, it’s nice to be surrounded with fun-loving
people who wouldn’t pass judgment on you. Thanks Patrick and all the crew for
unleashing that craziness in me.
