Kanto Freestyle Breakfast - Mandaluyong

I usually try to veer away with food posts before. My food vocabulary is limited to bad, ok and good thinking that it would definitely not qualify to make even one worthy food post. And then add the fact that it is difficult for me to unmask the different levels of masarap. But after the seemingly transformation of my site into a foodie hub (after four consecutive food posts), I find it now comforting to feature simple, peculiar and unique food finds. One of which is the Kanto Freestyle Breakfast in Mandaluyong City.

Robbie introduced this discreet and unassuming happy food place to me and Christian after our afternoon jaunt at the Mind Museum. We hopped on a cab and told the cabbie to bring us to Boni. Ave. in Mandaluyong. And from there, we asked around how to get to Kanto Freestyle Breakfast and people gladly pointed us to San Joaquin street in Plainview.

not your usual carinderia
I quickly noticed how packed the place was considering that it was still around 5:30 in the afternoon - too early for dinner (they're open 24 hours a day). Cars of the diners were lining up on the side streets. And Robbie was right, it's literally located on the side of a street like your typical carinderia in your local neighborhood.

Upon checking out their menu, you'd notice a wide choice of breakfast items on the list. Not your typical silogs but food items that you'd probably see on fancy breakfast restaurants but priced very reasonably. Some of the items were foreign to me (black coffee and a banana being my breakfast staple).

hmm... what to order next time eh?
Me and Robbie both got Honey Garlic Chicken for 90 pesos each plate and the three of us shared a plate of Spicy Sardine Tempura for 90 pesos. The Chicken was a hit to everyone. The combination of the sweet garlicky taste of the chicken to the sour cream dip and the tomato/basil side dish and the garlic rice was perfect. But on the contrary, I didn't like the Sardine Tempura dish at all. It wasn't spicy and it tasted plain. Totally forgettable. But thank goodness for the garlic rice, scrambled eggs and tomato side dish from that plate. Those extra servings made me happy.

Their serving was quite huge and the thought of ordering another dish was pure gluttony but yes we did, we also got some Eggs Benedict for 90 pesos. Christian ordered Vigan Longganisa for 90 pesos with extra bacons for 20 pesos. He liked everything on his plate and I have to agree with him when I took a bite on one of those longganisas and bacons. The eggs were also great and we all wished that we had extra food storage in our systems to try their pancakes and waffles. Another thing is that the servers (weird for a carinderia right?) were so attentive and attended to every request we had. What I hated was the slow serving time of our ordered food. I give it to them though, they do everything from scratch and with love.

Overall, the breakfast experience for dinner in a kanto in Mandaluyong was great. Plus the good company. And the endless stories. Beer na lang ang kulang, but we have to pass this time - sino nga naman ang umiinom after breakfast?

I love breakfast sets. They're always fresh to my palate. A fresh alternative to my coffee-banana brekkie routine. Good thing is that the Kanto Freestyle Breakfast in Mandaluyong serves breakfast food items all day, everyday and within the budget. Me now thinking what to order next time. Hmm.

  8. We were very excited to try out this new restaurant as soon as we heard the raves of some friends. While the selections seemed appetizing, the service was such a letdown. The staff lacked professionalism, courtesy and proper cleanliness and food handling knowhow.. They even seemed eager to taste the food like us and were eating in between order taking and payments - right in front of the customers! Moreover, almost everything we planned out to order was not available ;( Lastly, I hope they check the quality of the oil they use to fry their chicken, a bit malansa and seemed pretty old already. So much potential but needs a lot of improvement. Sayang.

    1. That's too bad. We experienced the opposite though, the staff were there everytime we needed them and they were very courteous :)
