Kalibo - Caticlan - Boracay

So who cares if I've never been to Boracay?! Well... no one. But come to think of it, it won't be the 4th best island in the world for nothing. So one boring day at work, I asked some of my co-teachers if they would like to go to (drum rolls please!) - Boracay. Two of them nodded so I booked a Manila-Kalibo-Manila flight on the spot. Only then I realized that the 3 of us were all Boracay-virgins. Ok, no pressure. We'll just enjoy the sun, beach, sand and the hot men!

wala pa tayo sa Boracay.. relaaks
Kalibo to Caticlan

Our entry point was the Kalibo International airport. We arrived there at around 6:00 a.m. From there, we took a van to Caticlan Jetty Port. Those vans are parked just a few meters away from the arrival area of the airport. You have two options; pay 250 pesos for the van + boat fare to Boracay or 225 pesos for the van only. It took us almost an hour and a half to reach Caticlan (check here for discounted tours, transportation and activities in Boracay)

Caticlan Jetty port
our boat to Boracay. woot!
Caticlan Jetty port to Cagban port

Upon arrival at the Caticlan Jetty port you need to ride a boat to get to Boracay. Look out for the three windows for the payments. The standard boat fare is 25 pesos-30 pesos each person. Next window will be the environmental fee of 75 pesos each person (60 pesos for students and senior citizens). The third and last window will be for the terminal fee of 100 pesos each person.

There are available boats up to 10 p.m. Should you wish to arrange for later trips don't hesitate to ask the officials inside the terminal beforehand for a special arrangement at a certain cost of course.

Tabon port to Tambisaan port

Apparently, there's this Tabon port in Caticlan that is just a tricycle ride away from the more famous Caticlan Jetty port (30 pesos each person). It's just a small port that usually serves as the alternative port and the endpoint is at Tambisaan port in Boracay island. We tried getting to Boracay on this port during my August 2013 trip and found out that it was a cheaper option.

We shelled out 30 pesos each for the boat fare, 75 pesos each for the environmental fee and 25 pesos each for the terminal fee. That's 70 pesos cheaper than in Caticlan Jetty port.

Tambisaan port in Boracay
Cagban port/Tambisaan port to White Beach - Station 1, 2 and 3 (or anywhere in that area)

After a boat ride of around 10 minutes, you will reach the Cagban port or Tambisaan port of Boracay. If you are traveling alone it's better to ride a tricycle and wait for other passengers to fill it up. Each passenger will have to pay 20 pesos and you will be dropped off at the station of your choice (the main highway/Angol Road) and you need to walk a few meters on the designated alleys to reach the White beach.

But if you're in a group you can occupy the whole tricycle (up to 5 persons) and pay 100 pesos for the "special trip" - which covers everyone in the group. The tricycle driver should drop you off a few meters away from the White beach.

Cagban Jetty port
the 7-seater trike (plus the driver )
may komunidad pala talaga (?!)
And then we reached the White Beach in Boracay! After almost 4 hours from Manila and countless fees we have to endure we were now in Boracay baby!

Whew!
White Beach to Cagban port/Tambisaan port

There are some tricycle terminals near the beach. These are for "special trip" rides. You have to pay 100 pesos for the whole tricycle and the driver won't be getting passengers anymore. If you choose to pay only 20 pesos per person, you have to walk up to the main road (Angol Road) and wait for tricycles there. You need to be specific that you are paying for a single seat only and not for the whole ride. Also, be specific on your chosen port.

Cagban port to Caticlan Jetty port

Be ready to spare a few bucks upon arrival at the Cagban port. The boat fare is about 25 pesos to 30 pesos each person. Then you need to pay a terminal fee of 100 pesos each person.

Again, there are available boats up to 10 p.m. Should you wish to arrange for later trips don't hesitate to ask the officials inside the terminal beforehand for a special arrangement at a certain cost.

Tambisaan port to Tabon port

Tambisaan port is an alternative port in Boracay island with boats going to Caticlan at 30 pesos each person. No terminal fee was collected from us (9 p.m.) so I'm not that sure if it's because it was late already or because there are really no terminal fees from this port. Endpoint was the Tabon port in Caticlan.

Caticlan Jetty port to Kalibo airport

We paid 250 pesos for the aircon ferry boat with van transfer going to Kalibo airport. The last trip for the boats is at 9:00 p.m. while the last van going to Kalibo is at 8:00 p.m. They also offer special trips for both boat and van for your own convenience. Double check if the van is heading to the airport or the town proper. It was a 2-hour drive because of some road repairs along the main highway.

Bagobos Resto Grill

We were starving when we reached the Kalibo airport and when we spotted the Bagobos Resto Grill in front of the Kalibo airport, we stopped by and ordered grilled pork and chicken with pinakbet. Aside from the great meal (we had 3 cups of rice each), they also have free wi-fi access which was a great time-killer (we've got 9 hours to spare).

Taunan Refreshment

Another option that I discovered on my August 2013 trip was the Taunan Refreshment. We had some lugaw (rice porridge) with egg for 20 pesos that energized our tired and weary bodies. They're open 24 hours and their usual diners were airport staff, pilots and flight attendants.

Kalibo airport

It was around 8:30 p.m. (and we were way too early for our scheduled 4 a.m. flight) when we asked the staff if we could sleep on the restaurant. The staff thought that we were bluffing but when we said that we were serious they asked the manager about it. Of course she said no, so we went on to the airport and asked if we could stay inside even if our flight will be after 7 hours. They declined. Their airport is not sleeper-friendly (is there such a word?).

So we were there outside with a bunch of backpackers and slept on the cold floor. We didn't care much about sleeping on the floor but mosquitoes were everywhere and we had to cover ourselves with our malongs. I did sleep well and even dreamt of something weird.

'Pag tayo pinaalis tapos sila hindi gulo 'to.
Pakilatag na ang banig. Maglagay na rin ng off lotion.
With 100 pesos terminal fee, the airport is nice (in spite of its being not sleeper-friendly). The flight was on-time and we didn't encounter any inconvenience (except for the mosquitoes).

**updated November 18, 2013**

During my August 2013 trip, the current terminal fee for domestic flights from the Kalibo airport is 100 pesos and for international flights is 500 pesos.

If you have any question regarding the ins and outs of Boracay/Kalibo just give me a buzz :)

I was looking for information on how to get from Kalibo to Catliclan and thence to Boracay, and this is the most informative pae I have seen so far. Just one question - what time is the last ferry from Caticlan to Boracay? I mean, if I arrive by Zest at 19:40 hrs at Kalibo, can I still reach Boracay the same night?

the problem here is, it takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours from kalibo to caticlan and the last trip of the boats is up to 9 p.m. you can hire a special boat trip the same night but it will be expensive.

i can ask our guide in boracay for assistance should you wish to hire a special boat :)

  7. Why are passengers waiting for their flight not allowed to sleep/wait at the airport? The "not sleeper-friendly" reason is hard to buy. Btw, your 5 a.m. look tells the world you are ready and eager to go to work at 12 LOL. Just kidding.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi bertN. It's not naman na they told us that it's not "sleeper friendly" but we just assumed :)

Their terminal is kinda small and it can only fit in the next flight available so you cannot stay longer than usual inside so people tend to hang out and sleep outside specially if your flight is during the wee hours.

We don't wanna go home and go straight to work hence the photo. And I also have this tendency to "not-pose" while there's a camera :)

so ang RT nun eh 560 pesos.. pero nakakapagod ang mga transfers para sa inyo na may mga kids pa...kaya medyo ok na din ang 850 pesos kung kaya nyo naman...

it's totally up to you, pero kaya naman talaga i-DIY yun eh... sayang din ang almost 300 each di ba?

  16. Hello po. I hope you can receive this even if your trip was Months ago. My friends and I are going to Boracay next year. Nasa California po kasi ako and ako pa nagpaplano para sa group namin so I want to make our experience good.

Yung 250 pesos po na van fare from Kalibo to Port is per person? or for the entire Van? How long did it take you to get to the port? May traffic na ba sa lagay na yon? 2pm kasi Checkin time namin sa hotel and we will probably be late kasi 1:15 arrival namin sa Kalibo aiport.

Thanks for all the info here though. Very helpful. I'm still undecided if gagawin namin ung ginawa nyo na walang specific plans, or getting the 1,000 pesos per person Rountrip Kalibo-Port-Hotel & Hotel-Port-Kalibo transfers. Not sure if it's worth it for the price. Bayad na daw sa 1000 lahat ng fees etc eh..

Would love to know what you think po. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. hi steph! yes po. as of feb 2012 eh 250 per passenger ang van to caticlan. walang traffic eh. tamang malayo lang talaga ang distance pero maganda naman ang view. pwede naman siguro kayo mag late check-in, sabihan nyo lang siguro yung hotel na male-late kayo para alam din nila. about the offer ng hotel, ilan ba kayo sa group. if per person ganito ang breakdown; van 250 pesos, 150 pesos for all the fees and the boat fare and 100 pesos for the trike ride (not individual fare). and do the same computation pagbalik sa kalibo airport. so roughly mga 850 per person two-way. so i think ok na yung offer ng hotel, less hassle pa. what do you think?

  18. Hello, nice trip. very informative...
Last trip there was 2009 so going there this coming 2013 i think would be different...
We booked from Manila to Kalibo and will arrive around 7:45PM with my wife.
Question, Stay in Kalibo for the night and find a hotel there? and party in Kalibo.
Or Push through to Caticlan and find a hotel there and go to boracay the next morning?
    What do you think?
What is the earlist time the bus leaves in Kalibo to Caticlan?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i think it would be better if you find a nice hotel in kalibo. i think it would be hard for you to travel to caticlan at night. you wouldn't know what will happen on the road for the two-hour trip. with regard to the bus/van i think they are stationed outside the airport as early as 5:00 a.m. you can always ask the people at the kalibo airport for the earliest ride to caticlan :)

  19. HI !

KUDOS to you !! i love your blog.... so informative... :)) this would really help me with our plan to go to bora next week with my husband...

BTW, with regard to the bus/van that you mentioned outside the airport... are you sure ?? so hindi na ba kailangang pumunta ng bus terminal (CERES BUS LINE) to go to CaTICLAN jETTY PORT?

AND also how much did you pay for a tour guide (ate rose) ??

P.S: napuntahan nyo ba lahat i mean from station 3 to station 1?

    ReplyDelete

    1. hi ching! yes indeed. you need not to go to ceres terminal. just right outside the kalibo airport you can find vans and buses going to caticlan.

ate rose is affiliated with one of the tour operators/water activities so all her quoted fares are inclusive of everything. no need to pay her extra.

you can walk your way from station 3 to 1 and vice versa. it's actually a common thing for tourists to walk :)

enjoy boracay ching and balitaan mo ko :)

    1. hi ali. i think they start as early as 6 am. kalibo airport is almost 2 hours away from boracay so if you leave your hotel in boracay at 7 a.m., you could probably arrive at around 9:30 in kalibo airport (including turn around time). so booking an 11:30 a.m. flight from kalibo to cebu is the safest time.

and also, wag na siguro kayo magdala ng food kasi may mga carinderia style eateries sa mga alleys leading to white beach. and malapit lang ang palengke (nasa main road) from white beach so you could buy there nalang and if may kitchen yung inn nyo eh you could cook there nalang :)

    1. hi belinda! you can do that instead of doing what we did na sa labas ng airport natulog. there are many inns na malapit sa kalibo airport. you can arrange an early morning pick up sa kahit na kaninong trike driver papunta sa airport or hanap ka ng walking distance na inn :)

    1. Tambisaan port in Boracay and Tabon port in Caticlan collects cheaper terminal fees. you can ask around to where it is located. you should be in Kalibo airport roughly 1 1/2 hours before your flight. you can leave boaracy around 5pm :)

  47. Hello ma'am. Thank you sa informative na blog going to Bora. May question lang po ako, kasi po last last week ata yun, I availed yung promo fair ng Air Asia going to Kalibo, August din yung flight namin. So eto po yung question ko.

    1. I read na August din po kayo nag Bora, kami po alis kami ng 28Aug to 02 Sept, question is, hindi po ba kayo inulan?

    2. From what terminal po kayo? Terminal 4 din po ba? How much po yung terminal fee sa NAIA Terminal 4? Hindi po ba nadelayed flight nyo?

    3. And ang arrival po namin sa Kalibo is 7:05pm (kung hindi madedelayed yung flight) haha, aabot pa po ba kami sa boat kapag ganung oras dating namin sa Kalibo?

Waah. Sorry po ang dami kong tanong, first time po kasi, tapos ako yung nag oorganize so I have to plan and know everything. I've been reading tons of blogs na po, until nakita ko tong sa inyo. Hoping you can help me.

    Salamat po ng Marami!!! ^_^

      enjoy boracay!

We wud just like to ask your expert opinion as to how to go about our trip, we are from cebu city ang our flight to kalibo is at 8pm. Is there a way we can have a van that will take us directly to caticlan and reach boracay at that hour then?

    1. Yes Maridyll. Vans and ferries do operate until midnight (or after that during summer). Expect to pay higher fares in ferries nga lang :)
